are working on a brand new Album! How The Fallen Are Mighty By Suart Moxham .........(july 19, 2024) |
Spike was at the second gig Young Marble Giants ever did. It took place in a small, city centre, council run youth club/venue called Grassroots. How appropriate I suddenly realise that name is! |
It
was 1979 and the band were trying out their musical ideas live, having
seeded the stream with thirty numbered cassettes of their home recorded
set. He, and the fellow members of his band Reptile Ranch, became friends,
encouragers and enablers of YMG. Spike became and remains our first, and
one of our greatest, fans. He has worked extensively in various iterations
with all three (four, including Drew Moxham) of the former Giants in the
forty five years since then. Classically trained on the viola, he is also a distinctive guitarist and has become an accomplish recordist, currently on DAW software. Some of his very best musical accompaniments were achieved one of the albums he recorded as Alison and Spike, called “The Shady Tree.” |
Artwork idea for the cover |
Spike is a man of passionate enthusiasms. I recall that, at the time, he was fascinated with The Golden Section and he wanted to use it in the treatment of the songs on that album. He also had a particular sonic palette which sounds like something from the future – no musical instruments, but beautifully wielded noises which could be the reversing alarms for flying saucers! I guess the combination of formal training as the third element is what helped to produce that extraordinary sounding record. |
Earlier
this year I put together a dozen songs; my most recently written seven
and five which have been waiting for a suitable context. I recorded
them as simple guitar and vocal WAV files and emailed them to him with
a completely free hand to do as he pleases. So far he has returned four,
which are exciting and I can't wait to mix them!
